ORANGE RIVER GOLD
Our Kalahari Largemouth Yellowfish Expeditions focus on a pristine 35km section of the lower Orange River, around the Onseepkans Gorge. This stretch of river, bordered by pristine Kalahari desert wilderness, is inaccessible to the general public due to the class 4 rapids and technical portages that are needed to access water from day 3 to 6.
The focus of these trips is targeting the elusive largemouth yellowfish on fly. All fishing is done either off your individual inflatable Ark kayak while on the drift, at anchor, or on foot off the banks. Although largies are the primary target species, the smallmouth yellowfishing is also excellent, and big fish are often taken on streamers while fishing for largies.
All fly fishing is strictly catch and release, with single de-barbed hooks. All trips are planned over the preferred moon phase in the prime time of the year. Numbers are limited to 4 rods per expedition.
The expeditions are based on a self-sufficient multi-night wilderness camping setup. They are aimed at adventurous anglers, with an appetite for a pristine wilderness experiences and a good level of fitness.
All trips start and finish at Red Rock River Camp, situated on the banks of the Orange River in the tiny village of Onseepkans, 50km north of Pofadder. The camp consists of a grassed area, bomas for shade, shelter and cooking, washing and ablution facilities.
